HEAVY TAXES FOR YEARS
PROSPECT FACING FRANCE
Warning: From Prime
Minister
Nationalised Industries "Waste Of Money*'
Lunaon. Dec. 22
The French Prime Minister, M. Queuille. told the French National Assembly today, in the third day of the budget debate, that heavy taxation was inevitable in France for many years to come.
He said it was vital for the budget to be passed in its original form, and
asked the finance committee to withdraw its amendments. He hoped France 'would shortly receive further Marshall Aid funds.
M. Queuille warned the Assembly, however, that if France did not carry out her obligations under the European Recovery Programme it would be driven into economic paralysis. During the debate the nationalised industries were criticised by a Radical minister. He described them as a terrible waste of money. A Paris correspondent says there now appears to be a good chance for a compromise over the main points in dispute between M. Queuille and members of the majority groups in the assembly. The debate has now adjourned to enable the finance committee to reconsider its opposition to several of the proposals. The National Defence Committee which has also been discussing the budget today set aside a total of 350.000.000,000 francs for military expenditure. __
