PROFITS FROM SALE OF ELECTRICITY

WITNESS’S STATEMENT CORRECTED attitude OF TAURANGA'S MAYOR A statement that as far as the New Zealand Municipal Electric Supply Association was concerned, the Mayor of Tauranga (Mr L. R. Wilkinson) had never said that he was in favour of electricity profits not being used to reduce rates or other charges, has been made bv the president of the association (Mr Will Appleton) in a letter to the Bay of Plenty Times. Mr Appleton was referring to a recent report of a sitting of the Local Government Commission in Christchurch when the secretary of the association (Mr J. M. Fraser) was reported to have said that every municipal authority had agreed not to use electrical profits for the reduction of rates. Questioned further bv the chairman of the commission (Mr I. J. Goldstine) the secretary said he was pretty sure that Mr Wilkinson had agreed to the proposal, and added that he wruld obtain the minutes' of the meeting and a copy of the resolution for the commission. “In fairness to Mr Wilkmsrn. adds Mr Appleton. “I would like to state that although this matter has been discussed several times by our members, no resolution has ever been put and no.vote taken.”
