1857 APPLICATIONS TO DATE
(P.A.) Wellington, Dec 21 Recruiting for the regular force was described as “satisfactory” by the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones. A total of 1857 applications have been received from males and 191 from females. From this number 1644 males and 168 females have been accepted for service with a further 37 applications still under action,
The Minister said that between June and August the monthly rate of intake was 35'recruits. As a result of intensified recruiting the rate was increased to 50 in September and this rate had been maintained. Direct recruiting, started in September by recruiting teams in each military district, had resulted in an increase of 15 recruits a month. The regular force cadet scheme also had shrown satisfactory recruiting figures. The first intake in July was 90 youths and 160 applicants. The second intake of 90 youths was assured as 184 applications had been received. The standard of the second intake was most satisfactory and most of the boys had had at least two years’ secondary school education.
