THE FUTURE OF NEWFOUNDLAND

UNION AS PROVINCE OF CANADA

The terms of the agreement for the entry of Newfoundland into the Dominion of Canada as the 10th Province were signed at Ottawa on December 11. The agreement for union fs to come into force on March 31, subject to approval by the Canadian Parliament and the Newfoundland Government. If approved the British Government will then be asked to give its assent by Act of Parliament. Recently a prayer was presented to the British Parliament by Sir Alan Herbert and a small group of other M.P.’s asking for a general election in Newfoundland so that the people of the island might, through their own elected Government, determine their future. The Manchester Guardian criticising this proposal says it is asking lor a majority vote to bo set aside in favour of a minority. (In the plebiscite about 78,000 voted for confederation with Canada and 71,000 against). The Guardian believes a general election would produce a larger majority for confederation than the plebiscite did.
