FIFTY YEARS AGO
The following item of interest is taken from the Bay of Plenty Times of 50 years ago:—
The alteration in the Tauranga mail coach service, which begins next Wednesday, is a great improvement on the present service and will form the most expedious overland out of Tauranga. For the future passengers and mails will leave Tauranga in the morning and will go by coach to Paeroa, reaching there early in the afternoon. A choice of routes can then be had: a steamer will convey one to Auckland or the railway to Thames and thence by steamer to Auckland, which will be reached about twenty hours from Tauranga. The Onotiisi mail will be very much quickened and the course oi post from Opotiki to Thames will be three days each way instead of as at present a week each way. Besides being quicker, the traveller will also save hotel exnenses. This nuite throws the Rotorua mute into the shade.
