WAR AGAINST WASPS

IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT

IN CAMPAIGN

METHOD OF DEALING WITH QUEEN OF SPECIES

(P.A.) Wellington, Nov. 9. An important development in the campaign for the destruction of wasps, which have become a major nuisance in large areas of the North Island and are spreading rapidly, is reported by the Department of Agriculture. Natural baits which can be poisoned to provide a good prospect of securing heavy kills have been discovered by officers of the department during field work. The queen wasps of the species are attracted to certain plants and hedges in the spring by honeydew secreted by the insects infesting them. These plants act as a natural lure and when sprayed with D.D.T. are converted into poisoned baits, providing a valuable means of destroying the queen wasps in their susceptible phase.
