EFFECT OF AMERICAN AID
MAINTAINING STANDARD OF LIVING London, July 0. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Stafford Cripps, said today, that for Britain to maintain her present standard of living when American aid ended, she would have to export half as much again as in 1938 instead of a third more, as at present. To improve her standard, she would have to double her prewar volume of exports. Sir Stafford did not think that Britain could get as far as that in four years, taut it could at least try to see that its standard got no worse, he said. That in itself, would need a great effort by everybody. For the present, American aid was preventing the position from getting worse.
“We must act in the light of what we know or we will be faced with a much lower standard of living,” he added.
