Opening Round Of Cameron And Waitemata Golf Cups

Few Good Scores Rd, mlied

Many Downfalls On Tauranga Greens

The first round of the Cameron Cup on the Tauranga Golf Club’s links found Castell in a good position with a very sound 78-8-70. His nnrd inch’ded fours f“"t <'"y. holes and a total of 12 in all. His home run of 38 was excellent as after heavy rain on Thursday and Friday the greens were bumpy and difficult to handle. Galloway and Phelan (71) were verv steady as were Hare (the holder). Jrhnston and Randcll (73). It would appear 1 hat the winner will come from ibis list, although Frankham with 74 is canablc of creating a surprise. Castell, Galloway and Phelan are a consistent trio and will be hard to head off. Of the Waitemata Cup aspirants, Hodgman and Long 68 made an excellent start, including three threes which for a long-marker is a groat help. Bird and Hartman (71) wore next, the latter’s second half of 42 being of great help. Grinder, Hall (last year’s winner) and G. Parkes 74 aro on the next line and the foregoing contenders appear to include the winner. Hodgman and Hartman aro the most, consistent and it is possible the “IPs” have it. The chief causes of (he many downfalls were the bumpy greens after the rain, numerous missed putts of 12 to 30 inches being reported. Also, water in some of the bunkers proved a stumbling block.

Many players do not know that the rules of golf allow a golfer to drop a ball out of water in a bunker, behind the bunker, with a penalty of one stroke. One player successfully played out of two inches of water in one bunker, but another took four strokes and a wetting before he succeeded.

During the weekend, tv/o of the Hub's low-markers, Bateman rind Ward, competed in the Cambridge club's open day and the former won ihe senior bogey handicap. The best, gross score was returned by Hall of Hamilton 153, with Bateman 157 and Ward 15G. Some 90 players were on the links on Saturdav nnd apart from the greens conditions were most enjoyable. Tomorrow, the final round of the Cameron and Waitemata Cups will be played. So that those whose first round was not very good may also have an interest in this round, a medal scramble will be held in three grades. Those remaining in the Aquila, Ccnsolation and Four-ball events arc reminded to play their games so that finality can be reached if possible before the championship commences. The new triple greens mower is now in operation .and the "new look" cf the greens this weekend should be appreciated by players.
