FRENCH SOCIALIST CONGRESS

INTERNAL DIVISIONS SUSPECTED

POSSIBLE TURN TOWARDS COMMUNISM

London, July 1

The Congress of the French Socialist Party opened in Paris today, and started by deciding to discuss its annual report in private. A Paris correspondent says this is a clean breach of tradition and thinks that Congress have tried to do this as a way of covering up its internal divisions.

The main point at issue, the correspondent says, is whether the Socialists are to continue in the French Cabinet in coalition with the Christian Democrats. This position has tied its hands in the application of Socialist principles, and as a result, the left wing of the party is afraid I hat Socialist workers may turn towards the Communists.
