Association’s Meeting In Tanranga

In presenting the third annual report of the Bay of Plenty Boy Scouts’ Association at a meeting in Taurangn on Wednesday, the President, Mr J. W. Roberts, paid tribute to the work done for scouting in the district by the late Mr D. F. Miller, who was a former chairman of the Association and Assistant Commissioner for Sea Scouts prior to his departure for England last year. He also mentioned with regret, the resignation of Mr A. Ward Allen, who was nf ib" Association. It was decided to institute honorary memberships of the Association and arrangements have been made for all Group Committees to take part in a drive for members. During the year, warrant applications wore approved for Mr B. Judd as A.S.M. and acting scoutmaster of the First Tauranga Group. Mr S. Maxfield as A.C.H. and Mr R. Waddell as A.S.M. of the Mount Maun-g'-.-n r rp-nnn.

Mr then went on to give the Commissioner’s report for the year. He made special mention of the great response which had been made by the public to the appeal to provide funds to send four Tauranga Scouts to the World Jamboree. The strength of the various groups was given, the figures in brackets being those for last year: First St. John’s Waihi Group: cubs 25 (12). scouts 14 (28); Waihi Red Shield Group: 13 G2). 11 K,T ; - kati Sea Scout Group: 9 (12). 17 (17): First Tauranga Group; 26 (26). 14 (21); Mount; Maunganui Sea Scout Groun; 13 (1C), 13 (10); First Gate Pa Group: scouts 13 (10); Southern Cross Sea Scout Group: scouts 26 (26). A new group formed during the year, the Pahoia Sea Scouts, had a membership of nine cubs and nine scouts. Altogether, in the district, there are 93 cubs as against 78 for the previous voar and 116 scouts as against 119. He expressed the opinion that the provision of more adeouate training facilities in the district was desirable. and mentioned that hard work would jpe needed to overcome the setback which bad been given to Scout work by the restrictions imposed during the poliomyelitis epidemic. Mr J. W. Roberts was elected president and Mr D. W. Reid secretary and treasurer. Tribute was paid 'to the work done bv Mr Roberts, who although continuing as president of the Association, announced his resignation from the post of District Commissioner.
