(Times Correspondent)
At a meeting of the Pongakawa Rabbit Board it was reported that £2,031 had been collected out of a rate levy of £2,060, the percentage being 98.6. The inspector reported that during the month 17,780 acres had been treated with poison, and 13,000 acres had been fumigated. A total of 1,584 pounds of phosphorised pollard. 101 pounds of cvnacas and two gallons of carbon bisulphide had been used. Good results had been obtained, especially in the block of Crown and Maori lands at Galatea. The Rotomahana area had been treated with poison three times since the spring and although the number of rabbits had decreased there were still a large number about. The inspector would personally supervise another poisoning of this area next month. Areas for poisoning during the coming month were Rotomahana, Maniatutu Read, Rotorua-Tauranga highway, Paengaroa, the coast and Otamarakau, Hepura, and Manawahe Road, Rotoma on the Manawahe side, Te Teko, Tarawera, and new area at Rotoma.
During the past 12 months the board’s workers have caused a big decrease in the numbers of rabbits, and in many badly-infested areas the rabbits are no longer a menace, it was stated.
