County Building Permit

Building permits issued by the Tauranga County Council for the monthly period ended April 1G Installed 27. The value of the permits totalled £28,547 and fees collected were £l4O/10/-.

Tauranga Library At the recent Library Committee meeting, it was decided that in future, Library members would be able to take out two fiction books free per card, instead of one. It was also decided that all school children (Primary and Secondary) could join the Library free, whether they lived in the Borougn of Tauranga or not.

Revenue Charges A statement of revenue charges presented to the monthly meeting of the Tauranga Harbour Board showed that cargo dues last month amounted to £157/3/11 as against £95/9/- in March, 19-17, and the sand royalty £2/5/-, as against £i 19/-. The total revenue for the month was £023/8/4, compared with £598/18/2 in March, 1947.

Grant To Brigade Recognition of the service rendered by the Tauranga Volunteer Fire Brigade was made at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga Harbour Board. Following a request for a donation, the board decided to make a grant of £5/5/- to the brigade’s funds, a motion on these lines being moved by the chairman (Mr J. D. Alach) and was supported by members.

Salvaging of Material A recommendation that tenders should be called for the materials that could be salvaged from the old approach to the jetty at Matakana Island, was approved at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga Harbour Board. Reporting to the monthly meeting of the Tauranga County Council ’yesterday, the County Inspector (Mr C. S. O'Heill) stated tnat three cases in infantile paralysis were notified during the monthly ■ period ended April 16, one each from Katikati, Pongakawa Valley and Te flPuke. All proved to be positive. One case of diphthpria occurred m Maketu.

Grass-Cutting In Borough In view of future requirements, a recommendation by the Engineer (Mr C. W. Boak) that a three-gang grass-cutting unit should be purchased, was approved at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council. The Engineer, who reported on the question of grass-cutting in parks and streets, said he had been advised that one type of three-gang mower would cost £430.

Recreational Reserve Advice that he was arranging, through the Commissioner cx Crown Lands, to have the necessary proclamations issued to vest the control of the Davidson block as a recreational reserve, in the council, was received from the District visor of the Department of Housing Construction (Mr K. W. Rowllings) at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council. Pending the completion of the formal vesting, the department agreed to the council taking possession of the land, and advised that the letter might be taken as sufficient authority for the council to do so.
