The United Nations Assembly today adopted a French resolution, asking the Trusteeship Council _ to put forward as soon n qs possible, measures for the protection of Jerusalem and its inhabitants. Forty-six nations voted in favour of this and none against. Russia abstained. . . _■ Heavy fighting is reported m Palestine from the Arab town of Acre, which was attacked last night by mortars from a hill overlooking the town. The attackers, who are variously described as Arabs or Jews were driven off by British artillery fire. In the confusion, 140 Arab prisoners in Acre gaol, managed to escape. , Since then, the Arabs nave reported that large forces of the Jewish Defence Force, Haganah, have attacked the town. . Fighling also flared up during cue day outside the Arab sea pom of Jaffa, which was yesterday attacked by units of the Jewish terrorist organisation, Irgan Zvai Leumi. Irguu men put down a mortar barrage on the centre of the town, bm the Arabs replied with mortar bombs which landed in outskirts of the neighbouring Jewion city Ox Tel Aviv. . Rifle and machine-gun Pullets hit buildings in Tel Aviv, sending shoppers in the main street running for shelter. A British officer in Haifa said that negotiations for a truce between Arabs and Jews there, was going well. Members cf both communities were beginning to work together again, and unarmed Jewish and Arab police were taking stops to prevent looting. Haifa was captured by the Jews some days ago. Correspondents in Jerusalem that it is feared that there would soon be a battle between Aral's /ml Jews for control of the large British Army camp two miles outside Jerusalem. Only a few British soldiers are reported to be left there, and both sides are taking up positions waißng for them to pull out tonight. '
