TRIAL SHIPMENT OF TIMBER

USE OF TAURANGA POET

ARRANGEMENTS MADE BY HARBOUR BOARD

A proposal to arrange a trial shipment of timber to Australia was brought to the notice of the Tauranga Harbour Board at its monthly meeting. The executive committee reported that the vessel, which would' be utilised for the trial, would arrive in Tauranga about next June.

The firm engaged in the project advised that it proposed to arrange with sawmillers to rail truck loads of timber to Tauranga. It was anticipated that about 15,000 superficial feet each week would be despatched in the early stages. This timber was to be accumulated for shipment in the vessel. The board was advised, also, that if the loading was successful it proposed to maintain the trade on a regular basis. The arrangements, which have been made, wore confirmed by the board.

Reporting to the beard at a later stage of the meeting regarding the question of steel supplies for the Mount jetty, the secretary said there was a likelihood of direct shipment to the Tauranga port from Australia being arranged. The necessity to encourage the firm in its endeavours, was stressed by the chairman (Mr J. D. Alach). Mr S. F. Newton suggested that the board should seek the assistance of the beard’s honorary pilot (Mr A. W. Humphreys) to ascertain that full facilities would be available.

“This is the beginning of a fairly important epoch for Tauranga,” declared Mr J. Banks, who supported the remarks of the previous speakers.
