WORLD SPEED RECORD
ATTACK BY MODEL AIRCRAFT DISPLAY AT OLYMPIA FAIR (Special to The Times) With the world speed record standing at 75 m.p.h. for 2 c.c. model engines on powered control line planes, model builders everywhere are hoping soon to set up a now record. According to one British firm which will be exhibiting at the British Industries Fair, that record has already been broken unofficially by another modeller using one of its engines. These engines ( and others which wield speeds up to 35 m.p.h. in model racing cars and 26 m.p.h. in speed boats will be shown by this firm in the toys and games section of the Fair at Olympia, London, when it opens on May 3. Among the exhibits of this section will be hundreds of variations . of mechanical and constructional toys, models and dolls, dolls houses and furniture, engines and carriages and toys made from plastics, metals and other materials. One firm is exhibiting dolls made of a new metallic material specially light to handle, incorporating the single and double way movement of glass exhibits at the Royal Academy. Some special models have indoor and outdoor dresses together with complete night attire. The same manufacturer is exhibiting mechanical toys covering a range of over 40 models including motor cars and commercial vehicles, all built to scale and all replicas of vehicles in younger children there will be a special range including bath toys made from printed plastic sheeting and electrically welded to various shapes. These toys are completely watertight and tremendously strong. Even if stamped upon they do not crack or dent, while weighted keels enable them to float at the correct position.
