BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY

LOW PRESSURE AND

FIRES

Concern Voiced At Wastage

Incident At The Mount Quoted

Concern at the position that would arise with the water pressure as low as it was if there was a major fire in the district, was voiced by Cr C. Kennedy, at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council. He suggested that when the lire siren.sounded anyone found with a hose on should be prosecuted.

Cr Kennedy quoted a report of a recent meeting of the Mount Maunganui Borough Council, appearing in the Bay of Plenty Times, when Cr A. E. Page raised the question of what charge the council intended to make to the Mount Maunganui Bowling Club when the four-inch pipe, which had been sanctioned by the previous council was installed. He pointed out, according to the report, that the one and a-half inch pipe at present installed was only charged at the rate of £5 per annum, whieft covered a consumption of 200,000 gallons annually. Cr Page stated- that he had beeradvised that this one and a-half inch pipe had been running all night, and that 10 hours' running of this flow would use up the amount paid for. The Mayor of Mount Maunganui had expressed the opinion that the council should give all reasonable support to all sports bodies in view of the amenities that they supply not only to residents but to visitors, and also said that the necessary pipe was being paid for by the Bowling Club.

That, stated Cr Kennedy, was an indication of the waste that was going on and steps, he considered, should be taken to curb it.

The Mayor (Mr L. P.. Wilkinson) explained that Mount Maunganui purchased water from the Tauranga Borough Council in bulk and he thought that the time had arrived, in view of that report of wastage, when the Mount Maunganui Borough Council should meet the Tauranga council with a view to straightening out these points. It was, he added, unfair that the Tauranga consumers should be restricted when the council was supplying water to neighbouring local oodies and water was Wasted to the extent mentioned in the report. Cr T. F. Connor quoted an instance of the wastage of water at Otumoetai and asksd if there was not some way or restricting people using water outside the bejough. The Town Clerk (Mr R. B. Shearman) reoorted that cards dealing with the borough water supply position were now available for discriDutiol!. " On the motion of Cr Connor, the council agreed that the question of the supply of water to Mount Maunganui be "referred to th. 6 Water Committee for it to confer with the Mount Maunganui authorities and report back to the council.
