STEADY RAIN IN TAURANGA

BENEFICIAL TO FARMERS IN DISTRICT

ALL HAY-MAKING NOT YET COMPLETED

The steady rain which fell in Tauranga last evening, although not. as heavy as that of the previous Friday, should be of general benefit to farmers in the district. In some instances, however, hay-making operations have not yet been completed.

A total of .82 inches was experienced in the district from 9.30.a.m. yesterday until nine o'clock this morning. Last Friday 2.29 inches were recorded in Tauranga in ten. and a-half hours. This represented the heaviest fall since March 3, 1947.

Light rain, with intermittent heavy showers was experienced in Auckland yesterday morning. There were fewer fine periods during the afternoon and evening, when several sharp but drenching downpours took place. The rainfall for 24 hours ending at midnight last night was 0.42 in.

Showers fell in Hamilton on Thursday night and early yesterday morning. 0.09 in being recorded up to 9 a.m. There was a lull for a few hours, but rain se + in api in hefr»*p midday. The fall gradually ' increased in intensity and continued throughout the afternoon and evening.

Most of the haymaking and shearing in theWaikato has been completed for the season. Dairy production has recently dropped sharply in various districts and the rain, following last week's downpour, is expected to be of the greatest value to farmers.
