RECORD BETTING INCREASES
SATURDAY’S RACE
MEETINGS
Remarkable Advance Of £75/183
Some Bookmakers On Holiday
(P.A.) Auckland, today. While most bookmakers began a self-imposed vacation on Saturday, totalisator figures at five of the six meetings throughout New Zealand showed record increases. In racing circles the remarkable advance of £75,483 10s in investments was attributed largely to the sudden cessation of illegal off-the-course betting. The totalisator turnover for all the meetings was £248,713, compared with £173,229 10s at the same fixtures last year. A record was established by the Cambridge Jockey Club, the investments amounting to £41,444, compared with the previous total of
£33,309, an increase of £8135. The Thames Jockey Club also had its best day’s racing when it put £58,792 10s through the machines, against £44,988 last year, an increase of £13,804 10s. A record turnover for the West Coast was experienced by the Greymouth Jockey Club, which handled £23,176, compared with £13,835 last year, an increase of £9341. At the Tima.ru Trotting Club’s meeting, where £55,853 10s was put through the totalisator, the increase was £17,054 10s on the £38,789 handled in 1947. It was a course record. The largest increase in totalisator figures was registered by the Palliatua Racing Club at its Woodville meeting. The total investments were £52,099, compared with £23,510 last year, an increase of £28,589. It is explained that the figures in 1947 were affected slightly by a meeting which was held in Trentham on the same day and was a strong attraction for investors.
