The French General Le Clerc has been killed in an air crash in the Sahara Desert. It was across the Sahara that

General Le Clerc led the famous war-time march of Free French troops from Lake Chad over 4000 miles of mountain and desert to link up with the British Eighth Army on the shores of the Mediterranean. Later he commanded the French Second Armoured Division, the first to enter Paris at the liberation.
