MARSHAL SONGKRAM TAKES CONTROL Prime Minister Under Japanese Situation In Bangkok Now Normal London, Nov. 9. Agency messages from Bangkok say that there has been a coup d’etat in Siam and that the army has taken over control of the Government. Press reports name Marshal Songkram as the leader of the revolt. They say he has reached agreement with the army commander-in-chief to avoid bloodshed.
The situation in Bangkok tonight is said to be practically, normal, except that crowds are gathered outside the Defence Ministry where Marshal Songkram has established his headquarters. The Marshal has told the people that it has been agreed to promulgate a new constitution which is expected tonight. Correspondents say that this will give no power to the King. Marshal Songkram was Prime Minister of Siam during the Japanese occupation. The Government of Siam up to today was composed mainly of members of the Popular Party which led the resistance movement against the Japanese.
