COST OF OCCUPYING GERMANY
UNLIKELY TO PAY ITS WAY ANGLO-AMERICAN ZONE’S PRODUCTION London, Nov. 9. The United States Military Governor in Germany, General Lucius Clay, does not think the AngloAmerican zone of Germany is likely to pay its way for some time to come. He has stated that exports from the Anglo-American area are not likely to cqver one-tenth of the cost of running the zone. Production in the bi-zonal area last year was only 40 per cent, of nre-war production compared with 90 per cent, in other European countries. _ Geiv'ral Clav referred to conditions in the Russian zone in Germany which, in spite of what Russia had taken in reparations, had shown a substantial increase in manufactures. The main reason for this, he said, was that the Russian zone grow enough food for the inhabitants while the Anglo-American authorities had to import food into their areas.
