LOW SCORING AT TAURANGA Midland Gain Outright Win Tauranga And Te Puke Successful

The 1947-48 cricket season in Tauranga got away to a good start on Saturday. Ideal playing conditions followed threatening weather in the morning, and the new turf wickets on the Domain played well. Flayins on the Domain wickets, the* new Midland Club secured an outright win over Country and the Tauianga Club defeated College by a narrow margin on the first innings. At Te Pula' the home team was successful when it met the Albion Club. Midland Do Well Making their first appearance in the Tauranga Cricket Sub-Associa-tion’s Baker Cup competition, Midland started off well to gam an outright victory over Country by 15 runs. Batting two men short, Country in their first innings, were dismissed for only 47 runs, M. Grayling (22) and A. Vince (11) being the only two batsmen to register double figures. Bowling honours for Midland were shared by D. Jones, five wickets for 21 runs, and J. George, two for 15. Due mainly to a valuable stand by W. Ellis (21) and J. Clarke (19), Midland compiled 74 runs before the last wicket fell. For Country, Grayling bowled well to capture five wickets for 15 ■ runs, including the hat trick, and K. Sharplin secured four for 35. Again batting without the services of two men, Country scored 67 runs in the second appearance at the batting crease, Sharplin being undefeated with 22 runs to his credit. Bowling for Midland, Jones again handled the ball well to secure six Country wickets for only 18 runs. Midland required 41 runs to secure an outright win, and when stumps were drawn the side had compiled 55 runs for the loss of six wickets. Jones top-scored with 26 runs not out. Bowling for Country, Grayling took three wickets for 23 runs, and Sharplin secured two for 26. Scores: —

A first-innings victory by the narrow margin of nine runs went the way of the Tauranga Club when h met College. Having first use of the wicket, Tauranga scored 62 runs before the last wicket fell. T. Pickett nlayed a fine captain’s innings to head the batting list with 37 runs. He was the only batsman to reach double figures. Bowling for College, Ellison, R. Stacey, Aitken and Sharplin each secured two wickets.

College made a determined bid to gain a lead on the first innings, but were nine runs short of: Tauranga’s total when the last wicket fell. Aitken (18), Southern (11) and Pope (10) were the only batsmen to registered double figures. E. Beer was the most successful bowler for Tauranga, securing six wickets for 26 runs. In their second innings, Tauranga declared with nine wickets down tor 88 runs, W. Dashwood (23) and B. Brewer (16 retired) being the principal run-getters.
