DEATH OF WELCOME BAY RESIDENT
ONCE PRINTER ON BAY OF PLENTY TIMES
INTERESTING AND VARIED
CAREER
The death has occurred of Mr P. J. Hammond of Welcome Bay, who has served during his life-time as n printer, became a boarding house proprietor, and later took up farming. Born in England in 1872, he came to Tauranga in 1885 where shortly afterwards, 'he began his apprenticeship as a compositor on the Bay of Plenty Times. Some time later he was in charge of the production of a newspaper at Rotorua, where he married Miss N. Griffiths, who has since died. From there he went to a newspaper at Whangarei but later decided to give up printing, and returned to Rotorua as a boarding house proprietor.
During World War I he left Rotorua for Welcome Bay where he began farming and where he had been living until his death. Mr Hammond is survived by one son, one daughter, three sisters, and : one brother, Mr A. E. Hammond, of Tauranga.
