AUCKLAND WELCOME TO ARMY CHIEF
GREATEST CROWD EVER KNOWN Climax To Triumphal Tour Departure By Air For Sydney (P.A.) Auckland, July 31. A fitting climax to the triumphal tour of New Zealand by FieldMarshal Viscbunt Montgomery of Alamein was provided by Auckland’s magnificent welcome yesterday. The field-marshal made only two public appe*arances, at a Returned Services Association welcome and at a civic reception, but the greatest crowd in Auckland’s history, larger than the 100,000 who greeted the men of H.M.S. Achilles after the River Plate victory, were out to do him honour, and the city stopped for two hours to pay its tribute to a famous soldier.
Massed thousands of Aucklanders, including many people from northern districts not included in the field-marshal’s itinerary, lined the city streets along which he drove. Confetti, streamers and flowers were showered on his car, and at the Civic Theatre, as well as at the Town Hall, great audiences listened to Lord Montgomery’s addresses. The field-marshal’s New Zealand visit will end today." He will leave Whenuapai for Sydney this morning in his York aircraft.
