PROPOSED SET-UP OF DAIRY COMMISSION
STRONG CRITICISM VOICED
Tauranga Farmers’ Organisation Question Of Government Nominees Strong criticism of the set-up of the new Dairy Commission was voiced by Mr C. S. Moffatt who declared, at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga branch of Federated Farmers (Auckland Province), that it was “as you were,” as to any benefits that might be derived by the farmer. % He pointed out that whereas the Government had the right to select three out of six names of members proposed by the dairy industry, it was noticeable that the industry did not enjoy the right of selecting three men from a list of six Government nominees. The l result would be that the Government would choose the three dairymen less likely to oppose the Government’s policy and eliminate those that most effectively represented the feeling of the industry. Should one of the three selected men also prove inconvenient, he would likewise be eliminated at the following elections, and so the Government would make sure that the commission would be composed of “yes men.” , The intention of the Government, added Mr Moffatt, was to divest itself of responsibility, while still retaining control in all essentials.
