FIFTY YEARS AGO

The following items of interest are taken from the Bay of Plenty Times of 50 years ago: We were somewhat surprised on receiving our mail matter yesterday morning to find among our usual batch of letters and papers a small box containing a perfum,ed satchet, with pierced hearts, doves and cupids sprinkled promiscuously over

the upper side and a touching little verse on the centre, intimating that we had someone’s undying, affection. A reward of 5s is available: at the office to the sender thereof, as it is years since anyone remembered to send us a valentine.

The mine manager of the Sisters S.C., Te Puke, reports that the wet weather of the past few weeks has caused the 120 ft drive to fall in and has been abandoned for the present. A drive has been put in at a higher level .and is now 50 feet

in, loose quartz being in the face. He expects to cut the reef for which he was driving, within three weeks. Many slips are reported in the vicinity of this claim and the river has risen considerably. During three weeks only nine days’ work could be executed owing to the rain. Railway officials assure the Tapanui Courier that there are far more inebriated travellers on the railway at Clutha than before no 1 licence. Carrying bottles of grog, especially on holiday occasions is a regular thing and men who .were hitherto content with an occasional “nip” at. an hotel now drink to excess out of a bottle. We regret to notice that several very undesirable characters have arrived here to enjoy the racing carnival. It is just as well that householders should be on their guard and not leave their places untenanted when visiting the racecourse.
