ALTERATIONS TO BOUNDARY

CESSION OF. AREA TO TAURANGA Rotorua County Council Discussion Transfer Not Favoured By Ratepayers The question of ceding a part of the Rotorua County to the Tauranga County, as requested by a deputation of the latter body at last month’s meeting of the Rotorua County Council, was again discussed at a meeting of the County Council recently. During the intervening period, many ratepayers in the area under discussion, which is roughly 85 square miles in area and adjoins the Tauranga County in the north, had been interviewed by the .Rotorua councillors and the, general impression gained was that ratepayers did net wish to be transferred to Tauranga. The county chairman, Mr H. P. Ford, said that he thought the matter was one calling for a. ratepayers’ petition. He realised that the boundaries could be revised without the ratepayers’ consent, merely by acceding to Tanranga’s demands.

As the three-month period the Rotorua county had in which to make known its views did not expire for six weeks, the question was delayed until the next meeting of the council. In the meantime, as many of the ratepayers as possible will be met and their views ascertained.

The County Clerk, Mr A. Bellingham, gave councillors some interesting facts relating to the area. Its capital value, he said, approximated £50,700, made up as follows: European valuation £41,400; native valuation £l2lO, and Crown valuation £BIOO. It contained 72 European, 8 native and 34 Crown assessments. The areas of these assessments were European, 32,G31 acres, native 2800 acres, and Crown 180,900 acres. The total rates this year collected by the Rotorua Council was 1 £334.
