DESTRUCTIVE STORM AT HAWAII

WIDESPREAD DAMAGE Honolulu, Jan. 6, ■ The Hawaiian Islands have been battered by a storm for 48 hours. Waves which reached a height of 40ft battered shoreline areas, leaving a trail of damage reminiscent of that following the April tidal wave, which took a human toll of 173 killed and 291 injured. The Puuma.ile Hospital at Hilo was flooded, necessitating its abandonment and the transfer of 200 tuberculosis patients to the Navy Air Station Hospital. The lighthouse at Laupahoehoe, near Hilo, was washed away. On Maui Island waves wrecked 1100 ft of breakwater, valued at £500,000, rendering Kahulului Harbour useless.
