CHRISTMAS CAROLLING

Sir—On reading the letters published in your "Public Opinion" column re the Christmas .carolling, I considered a reply unnecessary, as there is always a percentage of the population antagonistic or unsympathetic to any spiritual endeavour. On reading the editorial on Monday December 30, I am surprised that the writer shows such a biased opinion of the real situation. His article, though well written, is more an attack on the Salvation Army's militant methods than the aforesaid carolling episode.

The Tauranga Salvation Army Band was not the only one to carol earlv Christmas morning. Whilst makinjgl no apologies, I would like the public to know our reception this year was as welcome as ever. A citizen of [prominence in the town expressed his pleasure,, although visited one of the earliest, by saying, "It was good to hear ,the carols, and greet a smiling face." If financial results are any estimate of appreciation, an almost doubled amount was given ithis year, for which we say "thank you" once again to the public for their generous support. To those who would remain undisturbed, there is the alternative of placing their donation handy, such as was done by many kind supporters. Although repeated requests were made all through for favourite carols, there will always remain those who do not welcome such a presentation of the Christmas message.
