FIFTY YEARS AGO
The following items of interest are taken from the Bay of Plenty Times of 50 years ago: In public schools of Japan, the English language is required to he taught by law. The brightest and most ambitious of the young men in the open ports and commercial cities of Japan are all eager to learn English as a passport to wealth, position and employment. The drought continues as severe as ever and during the holidays has heen accompanied by very strong, parching south-westerly winds injurious to farmers and most annoying to holiday-makers. The season for the past four months is without parallel in the history of Tauranga. A large shark wa s caught in the harbour yesterday by Messrs Norris Bros. It was hung up at the Victoria .Wharf last evening to let the public know what sort of fish wore about now.
