CALL TO SERVICE
APPEAL BY TAURANGA MAYOR
NEW YEAR MESSAGE FROM MR L. R. WILKINSON
“In expressing a wish that our community may enjoy to the full all good things that make life worth while, it is perhaps an appropriate time to review the conditions under which’we worked together throughout a period when each one of us was called upon to render a maximum service in the interests of all.” states the Mayor of Tauranga (Mr L. R. Wilkinson) in a New Year message.
“The magnificent spirit of cooperation which prevailed in order to preserve, not only for ourselves, but for the future of our race, the things we most value and appreciate, should not be forgotten. “The call to service during the years of war, was responded to with that degree of loyalty and efficiency which has always characterised the citizens of this district. Never was a community so conscious of the responsibilities and never an effort more justly rewarded than that put forward by our people. “Have we then reached a state of society when these experiences can be disregarded? It is not sufficient to have won a victory; it is equally as vital that the advantages won should be maintained if we can so do; then ought we to devote to the future, those forces which proved so invincible ,in the darkest hour of need. .
“I believe happiness and prosperity will be far more secure, and the wishes for a bright and prosperous - New Year, have a more sincere and deeper significance by a renewal ef this outlook. May we not only enjoy a full measure of hap-, piness and success in the New Year, but what is more important, may we prove worthy to receive such bountiful gifts as are within the grasp of a deserving people.
