TE PUKE NOTES

FIRE .BRIGADE'S GOOD SAVE

SAWDUST FIRE AT

MILL

(From Our Correspondent)

The members of the Te Puke Fire Brigade prevented what might have been a disastrous loss of a timber mill at Rangiurn last Saturday afterneon. The mill was outside the borough boundary and the brigade had to fight the fire, which had caught the heaps of sawdust around the mill buildings, with bucket and hand pump. Later, an emergency plant was brought into operation, the water being supplied from a nearby river.

This mill has been producing much-needd timber for the district and also supplying outside requirements. A fire earlier in the year destroyed the mill and most of the plant.

Swimming Club

A party of swimming .enthusiasts from the Te Puke club travelled to Rotorua recently to compete in the swimming carnival held at Rotorua. The Te Puke representatives had a successful visit, securing three firsts, two seconds and a third.

Miss H. Williams won the open dive, J. Butler the boys' fifty yards handicap, Mr L Bowen was second in men's open 100 yds., Miss B. Higginson second in ladies' 100 yds., J. Williams third in boys' race and the men's relay team was successful. Mr F. Higginson, a. former Te Puke swimmer, won the men's 50 yds. handicap.

Teachers Farewelled

Two teachers, Mrs D. Taylor of the primary departrhent and Miss Cowie of the high school staff, were farewelled by fellow members of the profession and pupils at suitable ceremonies on closing day.

Mrs Taylor is retiring after eight years at the school and Miss Cowie is returning to the South Island.

Mr F. Cook, the headmaster, referred to the work of both teachers in the highest terms and various presentations were made to the guests of honour. Personal Mr and Mrs W. Butcher and Bryan, of Opotiki, are spending some of the school holidays in Te Puke. Several Te Puke scholars attending colleges and schools in other districts returned home at the end of term. Among them were Masters B. Holder, D. Earp, D. and I. Searle, F. Wylie, D. Randell and B. Fraser. A large number of residents intend visiting the beaches over thP holiday period and indications* are that the Waihi Estuary will b e most popular with family groups.
