Nine passengers and three members of the crew were killed and five passengers and six members of the crew were injured when a TransWorld Airline Constellation, Star of Cairo, flying from Paris to New York, crashed on a small island in the River Fergus, near Shannon airport, Eire. Most of the survivors were admitted to hospital in a critical condition.

The plane carried 14 passengers, four of whom were Americans, nine French and one a Pole. There w*as a

Night workers at the airport said that when the air-liner crashed the explosion shook the foundations of the airport building and flames rose to a height of several hundred feet.

The first survivor -to reach Shannon airport was an air-hostess, Miss Ferguson. She said trouble developed in the plane as it approached Shannon. She told the passengers to fasten their safety-belts and prepare for an ordinary emergency landing. Then the plane suddenly appeared to get out of control, lose height and crash.
