Competing under adverse conditions the Tauranga Highland Pipe Band and the Rainster girls' marching team won the double in their respective competitions at Mount Maunganui on Saturday when the 5000 Club, as part of its. programme for the festive season, conducted a street march, parade ground and other displays. Despite the very strong wind and flying dust and sand, which made conditions most unpleasant for both competitors and spectators alike, the event, a full-day one, must be considered highly satisfactory. Keen interest was displayed in 'the various movements by a large attendance which was not slow to show its appreciation of the fine class of entertainment provided. The programme began' dn the morning with a street march by nine girls' marching teams and five pipe bands, the girls' teams being led off from the corner of Salisbury Avenue and Maunganui Road, in groups, to the skirl of the pipes. . i The competing marching teams were Rainster (Tauranga) Burgess .(Tauranga), Anchor (Hamilton), Beresford (Taumarunui), Pirates (Rotorua), Swimming Club (Hamilton). McCallum, pf the Hamilton band. ( The competing pipe bands were Morrinsville, Ngaruawahia, Tauranga, Hamilton and Rotorua The performance of the Ngaruawahia [band deserves special mention because it has been in existence only 12 months and its display was creditable under those circumstances. i ' "In"addition to the trophies from the club, a cheque for £7O was handed to the secretary of the association (Mr Small) to be distributed pro rata among the competing bands to defray expenses.

A feature of the programme was ja drum major's display for both the Tauranga and Hamilton hands, the many intricate Steps and drills being well executed and warmly applauded. As a wind-up to the iday's activities, the massed bands played the air " Highland Lassie."
