AMENITIES FOR COLLEGE

QUESTION OF SUBSIDIES Request of Parents And Teachers Reply From Director. Of Education Advice that the payment of subsidies on voluntary contributions was discontinued in 1931 and in the absence of fuller details of the proposals the association had in view for the expenditure .of its funds, the department found it difficult to advise to what extent it would be possible to assist, was received from the Director of Education (Dr. C. E. Beeby) at the annual meeting of the Tauranga Parent-Teacher Association on Tuesday evening.

The association had written to the department advising that it had raised funds amounting to £llOO and inquiring as to what extent • subsidies might be claimed upon this amount. The reply pointed out that as was known, the Government had already spent a considerable sum on developing the grounds, but possibly there might be some amenities in connection with the grounds or in equipping the buildings, particularly the assembly hall-gymnasium when available, towards which part of the funds might be devoted. The association might have considered the provision of a swimming bath and the Director advised that in approved cases the department was willing to assist, by approving grants in aid up to £2OO on the basis of £ 1 for £ 1 subsidy. The reply concluded by pointing out that if the association had any definite proposals for the expenditure of the monies, it was suggested that the association discuss them with the Auckland Education Board which body was the controlling authority of the college and would be willing to advise the association. The secretary (Mr M. W. Sandlant) reported that he had replied to the letter outlining what was intended to be purchased for the college. The principal (Mr A. M. Nicholson) told the meeting that he had looked into the snubsidy question while in "Wellington recently and had been informed that subsidies would bo provided only on a swimming bath and an assembly hall. It was, however, certain that a grent of £isoo would be made to the college for maintenance work on the grounds in lieu of subsidies.
