CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS Men’s Singles To A. Mcßride Mrs Sutton Triple , Title Winner Some excellent table tennis was witnessed at the Army Hall on Tuesday evening when the Tauranga and District Table Tennis championships were decided. Added interest was given to the tournament by the presence of two men aiid two women players from the Rotorua association.
AIlaM Mcßride, playing his first games since the joined the Tauranga Club, displayed some of his old form to win the men’s singles championship title. As he had not played for a considerable time he started scratchily, and had narrow wins in his first two games. However, he improved with every game and by the time the final was reached had come hack to something like his old form.
On the other side of the draw J. Lewisham, of Rotorua, had displayed his best form this season to get through to the final. He had a particularly hard set with his club mate, T. McPhee, who also played well.
The final game for the championship was a good exhibition of the of the game, Mcßride attacking vigorously and Lewisham playing the defensive chop game. Althougn Lewisham held a slight lead in the middle stages of the two-game set, Mcßride displayed rare determination in keeping on the attack to take tile final points. Allan Mcßride previously played in Wellington and before that for Dunedin and he will he a tower of strength to his club and association next year. The men’s doubles championship went to L. Brewer and W. Backhouse, who both deserved their titles for good combination and steady play. f In the women’s championship Mrs F. B. Sutton again won the singles title. Lie has not been defeated in any club or association game in her five seasons of play, her only losses being in the Auckland and New Zealand championships.
Mrs Sutton also won the women’s doubles with Miss E. Galhally, and the combined doubles with L. Parkes, giving her the triple title for the Bay of Plenty.
Miss W. Richardson was the other** woman finalist. She had a great struggle with Miss A. McKenzie in the semi-final, two of the three games going to advantage. The following are the results from the quarter-finals: Men’s singles:—Semi-finals: J. Lewisham, Rotorua, defeated T. McPhee, Rotorua, 21-19, 17-21, 21-19; A. Mcßride defeated W. Backhouse, 21-12, 21-IG. .Final: A. Mcßride defeated J. Lewisham, 24-22, 21-19. Women’s Singles:—Semi-finals: Miss W. Richardson defeated Miss A. McKenzie, 21-16, 20-22, 22-20; Mrs Sutton defeated Miss E. Galbally, 21-12, 21-16. Final: Mrs Sutton defeated Miss W. Richardson, 21-14, 21-14. Men’s- doubles; —Semi-finals: L. Brewer and W. Backhouse defeated M Kirk and A. Mcßride; J. Lewisham and T. McPhee defeated C. Babington and D. Ellison. Final: Brewer and Backhouse defeated Lewisham and McPhee. Women’s Doubles: —Semi-finals: Miss Richardson and Mrs D. McGregor defeated Miss L. Kirk and Miss A. McKenzie; Mrs Sutton and Miss Galbally defeated Misses J. and M. Nicholas. Finals: Mrs Sutton and Miss Galbally defeated Miss Richardson and Mrs McGregor. Combined doubles; —Semi-finals: F. Sutton and Miss Galbally defeated A. Cliffe and Miss Kirk; L. Parkes and Mrs Sutton defeated Backhouse and Miss McKenzie. Final: L. Parkes and Mrs Sutton defeated Sutton and Miss Galbally. Girls’ junior final: Miss J. Nicholas defeated Miss M. Nicholas. Boys’ Junior final: R. Nicholas defeated D. Ellison. Men’s plate:—Final; L. Parkes defeated L. Brewer. Ladies’ bracelet:—Final: Miss L. Ki;k defeated Miss J. Nicholas.
