AONGATETE BRANCH’S SECOND

BIRTHDAY

NUMBER OF GUESTS PRESENT

The second birthday celebrations of the Aongatete Women’s Institute were held recently in the Aongatete Hall which was beautifully decorated. A short meeting opened by “Comrades and Friends” and the aspirations, were held for the purpose of reading the minutes of the March meeting. The president (Mrs Morton) welcomed guests from Tauranga, Hai-rini-Wclcome Bay, Katikati, Apata and Waihi Beach. Mrs Christian represented the Tauranga executive and Mrs Cooper the fdderatvon. Mrs Keir of the Waipukurau Institute and Miss Keir of Melbourne, were present. Apologies were received from Mrs Lloyd and Mrs McNaughton.

Shoulder sprays were presented to the, presidents of the visiting institutes and they in turn gave Mrs Morten beautiful bouquets. During the afternoon Mrs Christian gave a very interesting address. As it was also the silver, jubilee of the New Zealand Women’s Institute, Mrs Christian chose for her subject, “Jubilee and the ideals of the Institute.” She stressed that the youth of the n/ovement is the institute’s real strength and that there should be a scheme for minding of young children during meetings.

Items presented during the afternoon were: Two solos, Mrs Goddard; two monologues, Mrs A. Walker; a dialogue, Mrs Grayling and Miss Nettleingliam; four readings—two by Mrs Willis ( a visitor) and one each by Mrs Goddard and Mrs Grayling; a poem, Mrs Haszard (Waihi Beach); a whisting, Mrs S. Wright; an organ solo,'Mrs Christian.

Various competitions were also held.

Before the conclusion of- afternoon tea the institute sang., “Happy Birthday” for the New Zealand institute movement’s twenty-fifth anniversary.

The' oandles on the cake were then lit by the youngest member, Mrs Grayling and blown out by Miss Nettleingham. The eldest member, Mrs Grayling senior cut the cake. The singing of the National Anthem concluded a happy afternoon.
