BASES IN THE PACIFIC

COM PROMISE PROPOSAL

Washington, May 1

The Joint Chiefs of Staff have approved a compromise proposal under which America will share with Britain, New Zealand and Australia the use of American-built- bases at Manus and other British islands in the Pacific.

The proposal, which has been forwarded to the Governments concerned, is reported to make it clear that America does not seek to control the islands involved, and has no commercial interest in them. It merely desires that the bases should he readily available for American national security.
