Baxter (Labour) .... 4433 Majority for Johnstone .... 194 The by-election was made necessary by the death of Mr R. Coulter, M.P. (Labour), who was returned at the last General Election with a majority over the National Party candidate (Mr R. J. Glasgow) of 53 votes, the voting on that occasion being: Coulter, 4427; Glasgow, 4374.
