FAREWELL TO LIBRARIAN

MISS P. TAYLOR HONOURED

TRIBUTES TO SERVICES

The Mayor (Mr L. R. Wilkinson) together with members of the Borough Council and the Library Committee met in the Council Chamber on Tuesday evening to say farewell to Miss Priscilla Taylor. Others present were Mrs E. Hutchinson who has accepted the position of librarian-temporarily, and Miss D. Potter, deputy-librarian. Mrs Stenhouse acted as hostess.

The Mayor, in farpwelling Miss Taylor, paid a warm tribute to her services as librarian in Tauranga and referred to the high regard in which Miss Taylor was held among librarians throughout the Dominion. He congratulated her on being granted a studentship at the Library School in Wellington and wished her every success in her future career.

Mr E. S. Hylton, deputy-chairman of the Library Committee, apologised for the absence of the chairman, Mr Bradney Williams, on account of illness and read the following tribute from him:

“It is indeed difficult for me to express the deep disappointment 1 feel at not being able to be present on this occasion. It was my privilege to welcome Miss Taylor on behalf of the committee when she came amongst us unknown and with her spurs still to win. I was looking forward with mixed feelings of sorrow and .pride to sending her forth (now one, of the best known of the younger generation of librarians) to achieve yet greater triumphs. I am sure Miss Taylor will agree with me that even she could not have achieved the splendid results she has, in vitalising our library, had it not been for the consistent support, both moral and financial, which she and the Library Committee have received from the Mayor and the Borough Councillors. In conclusion I would like to express to Miss Taylor my very heartiest wishes for her happiness and prosperity in whatever sphere the future holds in store for her, and my warmest thanks for the loyal and willing support which she has always given to me personally as her chairman of committee.”

Other members of the committee and the council also spoke, a welcome being extended to Mrs Hutchinson and congratulations to Miss Potter on her .promotion to the position of deputy-librarian. Mrs Stenhcuse, on behalf of the Committee, presented Miss Taylor with a handbag and purse.
