RUGBY COMPETITIONS TO-MORROW

TWO SENIOR GAMES Some Observations About The Teams High School Old Boys To Meet Rangataua The two leading teams in the Tauranga Rugby Union's senior competition for the Jordou Cup. which has been discontinued in the meantime and a knockout series for the Phelan Memorial Cup substituted are Judea and Rangataua in that order. Those two teams will meet the Cadets and Matakana fifteens, which have not done so well in 'he competition, on the Tauranga playing fields to-morrow in the opening games for the Phelan Memorial Cup. Roth Judea and Rangataua will be without certain key players to-mor-row as six have been chosen from these two teams to* play in Ihe trial Rugby match at Matata to pick the Bay of Plenty senior representatives, who are to meet an Auckland representative team at Whakntane on Saturday, August 11. Rangataua loses four payers to the trials at Matata and Judea two.. Those nominated are: D. McPhee (breakaway), Kakau (a forward), B. Te Kani (five-eighth) and J. Ririnui (lock) all of Rangataua and A. Tala (fiveeighth, three-quarter or full-back) and G. Mikaere (full-back ) of Judea. Odds About Even Judea seniors will come up against Cadets on the Domain tomorrow. The indications are that odds will be about even and what the results will be is problematical. When they last met this game resulted in a draw and i T will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow. Rangataua, on the other hand, has not been beaten by Matakana, the team which it will meet tomorrow and usually it takes the weaker side in its stride. With four Rangataua players absent however, the position is one for conjecture. What should be the match of the day should be provided when High School Old Boys and Rangataua mix it on the Domain. Both teams arc leading the junior competition with 13 points. The Old Boys team, how-

ever has played one more same than Rangataua. To-morrows' game should give an inkling of the possibilities of these teams in relation to the Oliver Cup competition. Rangataua won it last year and is making a great bid to do so again this year, strongly challenged, at present, by Old Roys. Not Doing Too Well The other junior game is between Judea and Matakana on the Wharepai ground. Judea has not been doing too well of late. At one stage, this side locked a formidable contender for the Oliver Cup, hut with recent defeats, has now slipped to third place on the ladder with 11 points. As certain members of the School junior team will be participating in the Bay of Plenty School team v. Whakatane junior representative game, this side and Cadets will have a bye. This match is in the nature of a trial game for the Hay of Plenty school team, which is to meet Sacred Heart College at Auckland on Saturday, August 11. In the third grade competition. School A will meet Judea on the Domain ground and Cadets will play School B on the Vi harepai ground. The Draw The draw for to-morrow is as follows: Senior Series Judea v. Cadets, No. 1 ground. 3 p.m. Referee, Mr L. Walker. Rangataua v. Matakana, No. 2 ground, 3 p.m. Referee, Mr J. C. Ward. Junior Competition Old Boys v. Rangataua.
