ESCAPED DEATH BY INCHES
MAORI’S PALL BENEATH TRAIN SEQUEL IN COURT How a Maori fell between two railway carriages and escaped death by inches, was related at the monthly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Tauranga, when Hokorua Himona, of Otamarakau, was charged with aiding in the commission of an offence of supplying himself with liquor for consumption off licensed premises, and attempting to board a train while it was in motion. Constable F. C. Lockie said in evidence, that at about 6 p.m. on January 29 he was on duty on the Strand railway platform. When the express started off, defendant ran toward it and fell between the carriages. The train was pulled up immediately, and it was found that the wheels were very close to defendant’s body. When he fell, a bottle of beer came out of one of his pockets, and this, he said, he got from a pakeha. “People, say it was the nearest thing they ever saw to a fatality,” commented Sergeant G. S. Saunders.
Defendant was fined £2 and costs on each charge.
