PATRIOTIC SHOP GOOD SUM RAISED The Patriotic Shop was taken on Saturday last by the Lady Galway Guild, in conjunction with the ladies of the Patriotic committee. All worked hard with the result that £CO 2/8 was added to the funds. The winners of the various competitions were:—First hamper, M. Woodcraft; second hamper, Mrs Magee; cushion, “Oceanside”; towels Mrs Cochrane; blouse, Mrs Marshall; doll, Mrs Best. Burf Life Saving Club Despite the wet weather there was a fair attendance at the opening of the Mount Maunganui Surf Club’s 1943-44 season. Several members of the executive of the Tauranga branch of the St. John Ambulance attended and matters of mutual interest were discussed with the local club. Mr J. Mitchell, president of the Surf Life Saving Club welcomed visitors, and paid a tribute to the work of the club and its captain, Mr Magee, who had carried on in spite of war conditions. Five members were on active service and one had made the supreme sacrifice. No calls i had been made on rescuers during ; last season and the chairman trusted the same good fortune would continue. I. Mr Mitchell then called on the •1 patroness, Mrs Mellish, who declared ! the season open. 1 Afternoon tea was served by the , lady members. Mesdames Morgan, i: Sutcliffe and Crean, and visitors i were able to watch a demonstration by the fourteen members of the . club. This took the form of a march past, a rescue, and first aid, . and the efficient manner in which the team carried out its work met with much favourable comment. Challenge Cup Presented One of the most enthusiastic members of the Mount Maunganui ■ Surf Life Saving Club was the late Mr Stewart Wells, killed in action while serving in the Air Force. Mr ..Wells was an original member and •also a winner of the challenge cup . for the most efficient member. Dur- ’ ing the opening ceremony on Sunday, Mr Archie Wells, on behalf of himself and family and his late son, .asked the club to accept a cup to ‘be known as the -Stewart Wells Memorial Challenge Cup, to be ’awarded each year to the most improved swimmer. Mr Mitchell (president) accepted the trophy on behalf of the club and thanked the donors. Anglican Sunday School The Sunday School year was closed with a special service and prize on Sunday, December 12, the .service being taken by the Vicar, the Rev. 0. S, O. Gibson. Special Hymns and carols were sung and an address to the- children -was given by: the Vicar. Prizes were awarded to Jessie Hodge. Joan Parkyn, Brian Thomas, Kathleen London and Norman McGibbon, while all pupils other than prize winners received a card. On Wednesday, December 15, a picnic for members of the Sunday School was held in the church grounds. The teachers. Mrs Purchas, Miss Baker and Miss Stapleton, assisted by Miss S. Roche and Mr Hadley, organised and carried out a, programme which included a treasure hunt, games, races, not forgetting afternoon tea and a happytime was spent by all;
