ON THE ROCKS

DEANNA AND VAUGHN

DIVORCE PROCEEDINGS Judy Garland, vivacious little lady whose ’ marriage to orchestra leader Dave Rose has gone on the rocks, caused a sensation by walking into the Mocambo with the Durbin husband, Vaughn Paul, says a Sydney message. After repeatedly denying rumours of unhappiness, Deanna has had to admit that her marriage was not a success and divorce proceedings are pending. So the gossips are talking. Judy and Dave had a runaway marriage, eloping in June, 1941. She was 19, he was 34. Early this year they declared a ‘‘matrimonial vacation,” Judy saying it was the only way they could settle their differences. Judy was very much upset by the parting. For months she looked sick and worried. She Jost weight and was reported to be ‘‘as thin as a pencil.” Deanna Durbin and Vaughn Paul were married three months before Judy and Dave, and their romance was described as ‘‘the world’s loveliest love story.” They had been boy and girl sweethearts since the days when Deanna was making her first bid for film stardom in “Three Smart Girls,” and Paul was an assistant producer on the Universal lot.
