Jewish New Year. The celebration of . the Jewish New Year, the 5704th year in the Jewish calendar, began at sunset on Wednesday. It will end at sunset this 'evening.
Infectious Diseases. Four cases of infectious diseases were reported in the Tauranga county in August. The cases were cerebro spinal meningitis, scarlet fever, diphtheria and opthalmia neonatorum. Tea and Sugar Ration
The Rationing Coritroller, Mr. J. E. Thomas, advises that the present ration of eight ounces of tea and three pounds of sugar monthly will apply in October. The coupons available are numbered from 45 to 4S for both tea and sugar. Licences and Permits.
In his report to the Tauranga County Council at its monthly meeting, the County Inspector (Mr. C. S. O'Neill) stated that during the past month G 4 motor driving- licences, 13 heavy traffic licences, eight buildingpermits and four drainage permits were issued. The Petrol Ration.
According to a Wellington message, the Minister of Supply and Munitions, the .Hon. D. G. Sullivan, said on Wednesday night that the War Cabinet had decided to continue the petrol ration to private motorists at the present rate of half a coupon,* and accordingly coupon four, at half the face value would be available in October. A party of children , representing; all the native schools in this district to-day left for Ruatoria, where they will participate in the gathering arranged in connection with the presentation to his parents on Wednesday next of the Victoria Cross awarded posthumously to the late
Second-Lieutenant Moananui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu. The children will return in a week's time. The GovernorGeneral, Sir Cyril Newall, will carry out the ceremony. It is expected that 10,000 people will witness the ceremony.
Patriotic Shop Ohauiti again made a splendid effort at the Patriotic Shop on Friday, September 17, when they raised
the sum of £75. This brings Ohauin's total for the year up to £l9O. The following are the results of competitions:—Jam, Mrs A. Fox (Te Puke); preserves, Mrs A. P. Wood; towels, Mrs Pinker (Te Puke); dinner, Mrs A. Nelson' breakfast, Mrs A. Carter; soldier's cake, Mrs T. Smith; mutton, Mrs Carpenter and Mrs Rundell; cushion. Miss E. Garner, baby's set, Mrs Marsh; square cake, Miss Manning.
