FIFTY YEARS AGO
The following items of interest are reprinted from the Bay of Plenty Times of fifty years ago; The ladies of Tauranga are in luck just now, the few who like politics can take an active part in # the affairs of the nation, but the great majority will probably be much metre interested in inspecting the new direct importation of the latest novelties from Europe which have arrived ex s.s. Ruahine to the order of Mr. J. Wright, of the Temple of Fashion, who has arranged for a grand show of spring and summer goods to commence on Tuesday morning, :the 14th inst., and to which he specially invites all his lady patronesses. A curious electrical display was witnessed between 2 and 3 a.m. today. Without previous warning sheet lightning commenced to flash in all directions, but chiefly to the southward, at the rate of 6 or S flashes a minute for some minutes, after which they came in less rapid succession, the display lasted altogether over half an hour and was very beautiful. Great was the joy amongst the extra good people of Tauranga of the male persuasion, when we published our extra on Saturday announcing that the Electoral Bill, including the extension of the Franchise to women had passed the Legislation Council. They said straight away “This means prohibition,” but when it comes to the ladies themselves they asked .what it meant, as they did not see the force of going to a polling booth just for the purpose of scratching out a person’s name.
