“HUNDREDS TURNED AWAY”
VISITORS TO TAURANGA
A statement that hundreds of people were being turned away from Tauranga because of the shortage of accommodation was made at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce on Monday evening by Mr W. G. Jaeger. The shortage of accommodation is a question which has been interesting the chamber for. some time, and at the previous meeting it was decided to put into operation a scheme whereby residents of the town who are willing to accommodate visitors should forward particulars to the chamber, which would make them available to the Tourist Department. It was reported on Monday evening by the secretary (Mr A. E. Peppercorn) that six replies had been received to the inquiry.
The president (Mr L. E. Woods) described the response as very disap-
pointing. Air F. N. Christian: We’ll have to build a hotel. I think. Mr Peppercorn: Or a block of flats.
The president moved to the effect that the chamber continue its efforts, the motion being seconded by Mr Jaeger, who stated that it- was the duty of the chamber to continue its efforts. “We should try to do something,” said Mr Jaeger who suggested that the difficulty might be overcome by the erection of a hostel to be run on community lines. It was decided to await the results of the chamber’s inquiries before doing anything further.
