BATTLE OF ATLANTIC

SHORTAGE OF U-BOATS Germans Digging Into Reserves Statement By Knox London, August IT. Further news of the Rattle of the Atlantic is given in a statement by U.S. Secre.ary of the Navy, Colonel Frank Knox . Colonel Knox said that the Germans were digging into their U-boat reserves to keep up their attacks on Allied shipping. The Allies are sinking U-boats twice as fast as Germany can build them, say naval experts, commenting on the statement by President Roosevelt and Mr Churchill that 90 U-boats had been sunk in the past three months. Germany’s building capacity was previously estimated at from 15 to 25 U-boats a month, but, because of Allied bombardment of German shipbuilding yards and engine plants, naval authorities believe that the present production is less than 15 per month and probably will decrease under more intense air attacks. They also believe that the present U-boat reserve is less than 300.
