BIG DAY IN THE AIR

ALLIED ATTACKS ON FRANCE r German Airfields Bombed Twenty Aircraft Missing London. August 17. Yesterday’s Allied air attacks on German airfields in northern France was one of the biggest offensive operations yet staged in this area. Places attacked included Le Bourget, Piox, Abbeville, Creteville and Amiens. A steel works at Valenciennes was also bombed. Our bombers had good fighter cover and a total of 3(5 German fighters was shot down. Thunderbolt fighters accounted for 34 of the enemy and the other two fell to Spitfires. We lost three Flying Fortresses, six Bostons, one fighter bomber and 10 fighters. Over Poix some of the enemy fighters were observed to bear Italian marking's.
