DAYLIGHT RAID ON GERMANY
U.S. HEAVY BOMBERS
Attack Admitted In Berlin
R.A.F. Strikes Smashing Blow At Hamburg
London, Feb. -1
Following up the smashing R.A.F. raid on the German port of Hamburg last night United States heavy bombers have made another big daylight attack on Germany. This daylight attack on the Reich is confirmed in London but as yet it Is too early for details of it to be made available. The raid took place over north-west Germany. The Germans admit the attack and state that the bombers came over in formation taking advantage of cloud cover. They state that there were several violent fights between their fighters and our bombers. This is the second big daylight raid on Germany carried out by United States bombers. The first was made a week ago when the target was Wilhelmshaven. On that occasion Flying Fortresses and Liberators attacked the target without fighter escort. Several German fighters were shot down and three of the U.S. planes were lost. In last night’s R.A.F. raid on Hamburg a really big load of fire bombs and high explosive was dropped on the city and docks. We lost 16 bombers including two belonging to the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The Germans lost one bomber in a raid over the north-east coast of England last night. There were no casualties and damage was slight.
